Manchester Neighbors Bus Tour

On August 17th, 2024, Manchester Neighbors Toured 

$1.7 Billion Dollars' worth of developments surrounding the Manchester Community. 

 

The tour stops included: (Described Below)

1. Western Penitentiary Redevelopment ($44 million): Five acres of the site along the Ohio River are expected to be turned into a public park. In November, the state awarded KCI Technologies the contract to design and plan the remediation and demolition at Western Penitentiary. Demolition may start in 2026 and be completed in 2027.

2. Pittsburgh Esplanade ($600 million): a 15-acre, $600 million development by Canonsburg-based developer Piatt that will feature a 180-foot ferris wheel. It includes a 400-unit apartment complex with 300 parking spaces, a riverfront amphitheater, restaurants, retail spaces and a food emporium. Plans call for a 650-space public parking garage. In addition: a 126-unit condo complex, a 13-story hotel and a nearly 200-foot apartment tower.

3. Ft. Duquesne, West End, and McKees Rocks Bridge Improvements ($132 million): The McKees Rocks Bridge will receive $25 million and the Fort Duquesne Bridge will receive $60 million in spike funding from the draft 12-year program update for 2025. The West End Bridge had received spike funding through the current 12-year program, and it will receive an additional $47 million from the 2025 update. The projects will create about 1,300 construction jobs with good union wages.

4. Kamin Science Center Naming Rights ($65 million): On Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, the Carnegie Science Center announced its rededication as the Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Science Center following a $65 million donation from the family. The building’s naming rights are indefinite. “The money will be used in a way that improves our galleries, updates our experience for our visitors, invests in our team,” the Science Center’s Jason Brown says. Daniel is the president and owner of his family’s business, Kamin Realty (the family lives in Shadyside).

5. North Shore Flats ($90 million): Developed by Continental Real Estate, the site is promoted as follows: “Cheer on the Steelers at the nearby Acrisure Stadium, mix bar eats with live music for a lively night out, or hike Three River's Heritage Trail along the Allegheny River. Within walking distance of the downtown business district, we make any trip to work, nightlife, sports, and outdoor adventures a breeze. Our brand-new one and two-bedroom luxury apartments feature stainless steel appliances, wood-style plank floors, quartz countertops, washer and dryer, and much more!” Prices range from $1,806 - $3,354.

6. The Tower at North Shore ($77 million): Developed by RDC of Green Tree, it features “301 luxury market-rate units in a sleek 11-story building.” The project is “designed for modern comfort and convenience, featuring high-end finishes and stunning views. The amenities include vibrant ground-floor retail, 117 dedicated garage parking spaces, 10,000 square foot Rooftop Oasis amenity deck, sky lounge and breathtaking city views, 25,000 square foot lifestyle amenity with wellness center, fitness gym, co-working space, speak easy and elevated pool, sun deck and hot tub.
